When working with hydrochloric acid and epoxy, prioritizing safety is a must. Make sure to always wear the correct PPE and do not smoke while working on the project. Turn off any gas connections or appliances located in the garage before application. Be sure to keep the garage well ventilated while applying the epoxy and hydrochloric acid. During the project make sure there are no children or pet’s around while applicating.

  • Useful tips

Use premium lint-free rollers to ensure a seamless blemish free coating, also having an extra roller can come in handy.  To increase working time frame store epoxy in a cool area 24 hours before mixing. To check for moisture in your concrete tape a heavy-duty garbage or clear bag over the center of the garage floor – leave for 24 hours, then lift one corner to see if there is moisture trapped inside. If there is than the epoxy will not properly bond to the concrete, and you will require professional help.

  • Check if your concrete has been previously sealed

To check if your concrete has had a sealer previously applied, drip a small amount of water on any part of the concrete. If the water beads, that means a sealer has been applied and the coating will need to be removed before the epoxy application. If the water is quickly absorbed into the concrete that means, there has been no sealer used.

  • Pressure clean the floor

Using a high-pressure washer clean the entire garage floor including corners and crevices. Ensure that you are waring the correct foot protection prior to cleaning. When using a petrol-powered high-pressure washer make sure to keep the area well ventilated or keep the machine outside to prevent the build-up of petrol fumes. When finished cleaning use a brush to sweep away leftover water and debris.

  • Acid wash the garage floor

Make sure you are wearing the correct PPE (rubber gloves, safety glasses, boots, long pants & a respirator) before applying the hydrochloric acid. Using the mixing ratio provided carefully pour the acid into the bucket after pouring water (pour in water first). Dip the brush into the mix and heavily scrub the garage floors.

  • Hose down garage floor

After acid washing the garage floor, use a hose to wash away left-over acid and debris and leave the floor to dry completely for 24 hours.

  • Tape up walls

Once the garage floor has completely dried, apply the painter’s tape where the garage wall meets the floor to protect the walls from the epoxy application.

  • Mix the epoxy using supplied ratio

Make sure to fully read and understand instructions before mixing epoxy. Make sure you have on adequate PPE prior to the application. Using your drill mix part A and part B according to ratio thoroughly to ensure even activation. Mix slowly taking your time and once properly mixed immediately start the application.

  • Cut in the edges of your garage floor

Using your brush carefully cut all edges of the garage floor with the epoxy.

  • Roll on Epoxy coating

After painting edges use your roller to paint the rest of the floor. Using an extendable roller will make the job much easier. Don’t rush and move at a steady, consistent pace and you can expect to complete the epoxy application within an hour. A useful tip is to listen to the sound of the roller, a loud roller means the epoxy is going on thin while a quite roller means the epoxy is going on thick. – Flakes must be applied on wet epoxy.

  • Apply flake coating

After you have painted 1m2 of the epoxy you can than reach over and sprinkle flakes over the intended area. Every time you paint 1m2, stop, apply flakes and repeat. Continue applying epoxy and flakes until the job is completed.

  • Let the garage floor cure

The epoxy floor will be touch dry in a few hours depending on weather conditions. Make sure to give the floor 8 hours before walking on it and 4 to 7 days before you can drive and park cars on the surface. The epoxy will be fully cured in about a month but can be used like normal after 7 days. Now all you must do is look after your floor and it will stay that way for years to come.
